Formerly 'Roberto Coin', the boat that Tommy will be using to cross the Atlantic was commissioned in 2009 for the Woodvale Challenge Atlantic race of that year.  The boat was designed by Phil Morrison, based on a Woodvale Challenge pairs boat and was built to meet all requirements for entry into the race by Jamie Fabrizio at Global Boat Works Ltd. Jamie is arguably the best builder of ocean rowing boats in the world and has years of experience. Take a look at their website here to see other projects that they have completed.

The boat is constructed to be as strong but as light as possible. Whilst the internal bulkheads, framework and decking is made from marine grade ply, the rest of the boat is built out of 12mm closed cell foam core, sheathed with fibre glass using aircraft grade epoxy resin.

One of the properties of the closed cell foam core is that is has almost no water absorption, so even if there was a breach in the hull and water was taken on, the boat would still remain buoyant. Even in that situation, the boat consists of 7 separate water tight compartments so any damage would be contained.  

The advantage of using marine grade ply on the internal structure is that it is light, keeping the overall weight of the boat down which is crucial for a strong time in the race. This boat is not only one of the strongest and best made boats available; it is also one of the fastest. In her inaugural crossing, Roberto Coin completed the race in 67 days, placed 4^th in the pairs class. Considering the conditions faced during the race, 67 days is a fantastic time and was well placed at the top of the field.

Although a pairs design, the boat is very adaptable to a solo attempt.  Whilst safety is the top priority when considering ocean rowing boats (and Tommy is extremely confident that ‘Roberto Coin’ will look after him), it is still a race and Tommy wants to deliver the best possible time he can. Having safety and speed combined in this way makes Roberto Coin the perfect boat.
